Loz

Born in 1975, Wolverhampton, UK.

Working from Shropshire based studio.

Returning to his home city to study for a Ba Hons Fine Art Degree at the iconic Wolverhampton School of Art. Graduated 2025.

MA Fine Art - ual/Central Saint Martins 2025-2027.

Loz is an artist exploring painting through the use of photographic source imagery. Working exclusively with paint to produce large scale artworks.  

The latest work explores portraiture through large scale monochromatic oil paintings that reference a conversation between the photograph and the painted mark. 

Utilising photographic source imagery as a critical part of the process, this body of paintings play with the traditions of the genre whilst challenging conventional process in the creation of dramatic representations of the known and unknown.  

These works are partially driven by an appreciation of Richter’s mono portraits and stand as a test bed for painting with shade, shadow, depth and light.  

Critically reflecting on representation, subjectivity and other factors are leading to an examination of AI based image sources as a basis for painting. Preparation for the Wolverhampton School of Art Degree Show 2025 saw the production of a series of works based on Warhol’s Marilyn prints using an Adobe stock image. Utilising UV/Blacklight technology to produce paintings that look one way by day, by night another. 

Underpinning all the works is a relationship between the painter and the subject, particularly as the portraits surround the artist in the studio. Bearing witness to the intense bursts of production that take place. The images inspiring, intimidating, questioning and challenging the artist as he works. 

Use of AI models and composition is driving the latest paintings since graduation. 

Having graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Wolverhampton School of Art in 2025, Loz will continue the journey by studying for a MA in Fine Art at ual/Central Saint Martins in London. 2025-2027. An interim exhibition is planned in London, 2026 alongside a residency.
